Lake Wairarapa needs love and care
Lake Wairarapa is the third-biggest lake in the North Island. I love the aerial photo of Featherston and Lake Wairarapa at the supermarket. It shows how close our town is to LakeWairarapa. It shows how massive the lake is. Lake Wairarapa also has issues and currently is in poor health. One problem for our lake is that human waste from our toilets, including nutrients and bacteria, are discharged to the lake with relatively little treatment. When we flush our toilets, the wastewater is piped to the treatment ponds, the heavy bits settle out and the wastewater is exposed to ultraviolet light to kill bacteria. The treated wastewater is then discharged to Donald’s Creek and this flows into Abbott’s Creek and then into Lake Wairarapa.
