The Phoenix is still rising

For those of us seasoned enough to remember May 1996, not much has changed, and yet so much has. “How Bizarre”, from Auckland’s OMC, was one of the world’s top selling songs, and number one in charts around the globe from Austria to Australia. New Zealand’s teams had recently won the America’s Cup, but the All Blacks had fallen short again in their attempts to regain the William Webb Ellis trophy. And athletes across the globe were preparing for the Atlanta Olympics. A young poet, Sonja Yelich, was expecting a daughter. She would arrive in November and grow up to be a pop star.
